• Whole_Inside_4863: That FiFA peace prize is looking pretty meaningless right about now.
• Limp-Pomegranate3716: I’m literally surprised he didn’t just state the Lionel Hutz meme out loud at this point.

Voters sour on Trump’s handling of inflation and grocery prices — FT poll (r/politics)

• Mr-ReDiCulouZ: I mean, we all knew Trump wouldn’t do anything about it. Shame MAGA Republicans have had their IQ lowered by Fox News to the point they believe the oval Orange is the second coming of Christ.

• fudgeplank: Dems still need to offer something better than EVs and identity politics. taking their eye of the ball is why we are in this predicatiment.

Putin warned former Soviet republic of “Ukrainian scenario” over EU ties. Its pro-EU party wins elections with 49.81% anyway (r/worldnews)

• demonfoo: I mean… yes? I thought this was pretty clear.

TIL Half of people who claim they have a food allergy do not (r/todayilearned)

• vonWitzleben: You can also grow out of them. I was allergic to pretty much every kind of nut as a kid, even got me into the hospital for several weeks once. Then when I was around 12, I got tested for allergies and turns out I wasn’t allergic to like half of them anymore. Now as an adult, I got tested a year ago and consequently ate hazelnuts for the first time in my life at 30.
• tryptomania: When my daughter was little she got her dislikes confused with allergies so she spent years telling people she was allergic to eggs before I found out and corrected her.

Phoenix police fire sergeant who brought gun to ICE protest, refused to obey chief’s order (r/news)

• Alwayssunnyinarizona: I am genuinely surprised our new chief of police did the right thing here. Sure, the fired officer will get a job in Chandler or Ahwatukee or wherever, but at least the PHX PD did something right for once.
• mastermidget23: Reading the article, this pos was basically saying “if I can’t carry a weapon at these kinds of events while off duty, I will just go against your policy and claim I quit so I can’t be fired”. Fucking psychopaths shouldn’t be given guns and authority.
• Iribumkiak: He is just going to get another police job in another jurisdiction.

Earworm Kars4Kids jingle yanked from California radios (r/news)

• ap83: I change the station anytime this comes on

TIL a supermarket suddenly closed in 1999 and the store was abandoned with all its products and equipment inside still in place. Since the store was sealed up everything remained preserved. (r/todayilearned)

• TGAILA: No one took full responsibility. The owners defaulted on their loans, the bank seized the building and sold the lease, and the new owner just let the contents sit until the landlord finally got a judgement to take back the premises. Abandonment by committee.
• LouSputhole94: Having read through the wiki, it honestly seems like a pretty stupid business decision. The inventory or assets they left behind could have offset the debt burden a bit. Or at the very least, had they notified the various companies they had renting floor space, those companies could have collected some things. Seems like they just went “fuck it, let the bank deal with it.”
• slice_of_pi: This is one of those things that apocalypse stories or zombie tales rarely talk about. The actual story of this supermarket is horrifying.

What’s something attractive at 18 but embarrassing at 30? (r/AskReddit)

• KellyAnn3106: Talking about your high school accomplishments.

Why does New York seem so dirty compared to other world-class cities? (r/NoStupidQuestions)

• TheSweetestChicx: A big part is the visible garbage. NYC has older infrastructure and limited alley space, so trash often sits on sidewalks before pickup. That alone makes streets feel dirtier, even if many other major cities handle waste very differently.
• WorldTallestEngineer: Most megacities (over 10 million people) have a lot of back alleys with dumpsters. New York has almost no back alleys, and no place to put dumpsters. So trash bags are piled on the street.
• WarderWannabe: Should’ve seen it in the 70’s. It’s Disney world now by comparison.

• ThisIsAmericaAnd: Congress voting to end a war they never stood a chance to approve in the first place. Baby’s already out with the bath water folks…
• Gloomy-Restaurant-42: Holy crap! If we had a functioning democracy, this might matter. 🤔
• thedavecan: “Bipartisan” being all the Democrats and 4 Republicans. Its actually impressive how they manage to misrepresent something so simple.

TIL a convenience store in Pocatello, Idaho has a video rental section called “Christina’s Corner” which was created for a woman with Down Syndrome who is mostly nonverbal, so that she could still maintain her routine of renting movies after the video store next door had closed. (r/todayilearned)

• mental_mentalist: Thats more if an in-person request imo
• MrCompletely345: It failed without armed guards to “convince” them.
• Acceptable-Corgi3720: You would have to be a silver tongued devil to call me up and get me to commit revolutionary suicide. I would be skeptical.

Phoenix police fire sergeant who brought gun to airport to meet mayor after bragging about killing her (r/news)

• Sabatorius: “Things are only fair if they favor me” classic conservative mentality.
• tsrich: Hey, times are tough, we can only protect some of the amendments
• HerculesIsMyDad: Except most people do like cops. That’s why they can be such a menace. I don’t know how the same people who don’t trust the government have full confidence in the armed part of that same government but they do.

13 men killed by US military boat strikes. Who were they? (r/news)

• Drone314: What no one seems to get is that the US provides other states with the evidence they use to convict terrorists and justify pretrial detention in secret, or provides the captors with a summary of the intelligence. Here…lol, “because we said so!” So this is why there is a breakdown of law and order around the world. We’re the baddies….
• AbbyRitter: Anyone still trying to argue in defense of this is either beyond stupid, a government propagandist, or a bloodthirsty fascist.
• DomitiusAhenobarbus_: Most Americans have just completely accepted this as a thing we do now.

Kars4Kids jingle ads were false advertising, FCC says (r/news)

• ap83: I change the station anytime this comes on
• Macdaddy357: Sham charities should be punished severely, not just told to stop advertising.
• adsfew: The damage has already been done. I’ll be on my deathbed and that song will still creep into my mind.

What’s something attractive at 18 but embarrassing at 30? (r/AskReddit)

• KellyAnn3106: Talking about your high school accomplishments.
• BrainlessVeal: Beating someone older than you in a fight
• FlyLess9643: Bragging about living on your own. At 18, it sounds adventurous and independent. By 30, everyone just assumes you have rent and laundry like the rest of us.

TIL that the Beatles briefly tried to buy the film rights to The Lord of the Rings, planning to star in it themselves, with Paul McCartney as Frodo, Ringo Starr as Sam, George Harrison as Gandalf, and John Lennon as Gollum. Tolkien personally disliked the idea and refused to approve the adaptation. (r/todayilearned)

• altrightobserver: It’s also important to state that, by early 1968, it wasn’t possible for anyone to buy the film rights to LOTR from Tolkien. He’d already sold the film rights to United Artists in 1967.
• farmerarmor: The 4 of them not all wanting to be the main character blows my mind. They were gonna do a whole proper ensemble.
• commandrix: He was right to refuse the rights. A LOTR feature with all Beatles music would’ve been kind of a train wreck.

Five people found alive after week trapped in flooded Laos cave (r/news)

• Artele7: Horrifying that they were down there so long but what great news!

• amateur_mistake: They should probably go buy a lottery ticket. Or five.

Image of ‘twin babies’ used by anti-abortion activist appears to show newborn possums | The Guardian Australia (r/news)

• reddfawks: I still remember when they tried to use the image of the shrivelled Voldemort under the bench and said it was an aborted fetus.
• andrewbrocklesby: Anti-abortion people lying, who would have guessed?
• Spirited_Pirate_3897: If your argument needs marsupials to work, maybe the argument sucks. Honestly, everyone should be doing a quick reverse image search before sharing this stuff, it’d kill half these fake “gotcha” photos.

What’s a moment where you realized someone was genuinely extremely intelligent? (r/AskReddit)

• VantaIim: The smartest person I know is both incredibly sharp, but is also incredibly well timed and precise with his comments. It’s clear that he has a well functioning brain; not just in the sense that he is putting difficult concepts together quickly, but also in how disciplined he is in choosing how and when to use his mind. I realised he was exceptionally smart when he had just been discussing a mathematical theorem and was able to instantly adapt as someone else entered the room without making them feel as if they had interrupted something.
• lymanra: One person explained a complex problem so simply that everyone understood him, then I realized that true intelligence is making the complex obvious.
• Dreammie-emam1528: The moment you realize someone is extremely intelligent is when they can explain a complicated idea so clearly that it feels obvious and they make you feel smarter, not smaller.

TIL a man in a unicorn pool floaty was fishing near the beach in Fort Lauderdale when he hooked a 10-foot shark that proceeded to drag him four miles offshore in his floaty. • Traditional-Meat-549: AT WHAT POINT does a person decide do let go of the rod??? Lol
• AqueductMosaic: Sea fishing equipment is expensive. This is a literal example of the sunk cost fallacy.
• Trojann2: This guy? At least 5 miles offshore.

• JohnnyGFX: Probably worried about being disbarred for bringing an absolutely frivolous piece of “lawfare” to court to waste everyone’s time and money on.
• strolpol: The whole DoJ is just spinning plates. Shop for a favorable judge, make up bullshit charges, drag things out until discovery

Photos show protesters and ICE agents clashing outside a New Jersey detention center (r/news)

• onarainyafternoon: God damn, the pictures are gnarly. Good for the protesters. People should read about the conditions in this facility. Horrific.
• zzztoken: Lots of focus on the protestors and not what they’re protesting about, the conditions on the inside or the hunger strike. Know it’s not a mistake.
• nygdan: “photos show…” is another way the media distances itself from actually talking about the events happening. “ICE agents attack protesting citizens”, while being the trith, is too much for them to say. but why have the media in the first place if all they can say is what photos from other sources like social media show?

Iran’s president offers resignation, citing total takeover by IRGC commanders (r/worldnews)

• Jonathan13211: Aren’t the IRGC even more hardline anti peace?
• zombiezero222: It was obvious the IRGC were running things. I doubt Mojtaba is even aware what is happening.
• Foreign_Cable_9530: This is from Iranian opposition media. It may be true but independent confirmation is lacking. This may just be the IRGC trying to gain more legitimacy.

• GovernorSan: Percussive maintenance, same reason why hitting your TV or computer or car can magically get it to start working again.
• ShoutoutsWorldwide: falls down a well, her eyes go crossed. She gets kicked by a mule. They go back to normal. I don’t know.

United flight diverted to Wisconsin after passenger’s ‘multiple attempts’ to breach cockpit, crew member says (r/news)

• Warcraft_Fan: No specific details yet like why this man was trying to get in. He was detailed and taken in by FBI after the plane landed, no one was harmed.
• ballsmigue: There was a thread this morning on this and someone who was on the flight said it seemed like a mental breakdown.
