Documents show federal surveillance operation in Minnesota targeted progressive groups, unions (r/news)
- kstargate-425: Holy shit. In any other decade this would be a HUGE scandal similar to Watergate and take down the Trump administration. With Republicans today, its just another Thursday…
- Edge_of_the_Unoverse: Fascists always hate unions.
- ASUethcisu: [They had officers going into librarys to listen to meetings about planning peaceful protests.
“Take, for example, a Jan. 31 meeting in a Minneapolis library, when a Homeland Security report says an undercover officer identified as “UCA 9833” listened as supporters of a progressive climate group, the Sunrise Movement, discussed sit-ins, de-escalation tactics and “having a police liaison and safety marshal present during events.”](https://www.reddit.com/r/news/comments/1vnvenh/comment/p3kt0i7/)
Groom accused of raping woman helping plan his wedding the night before the ceremony (r/news)
- DarkDuo: [She later woke up around 5:30 a.m. when the bride-to-be came downstairs, saw Weber holding the victim and began to yell at her.
Dang she even got yelled at by the bride to be](https://www.reddit.com/r/news/comments/1vnwkrk/comment/p3kze88/)
- restoretheday: This story is insane, i can’t wrap my head around the sequence of events. Her husband left without her?? Also learned form another source that the guy was a police officer until recently
- Anon_bunn: I’m grateful the prosecutor is taking this seriously. Frankly, I am shocked he was arrested at all. If he had told the police it was consensual from the beginning it would’ve played out completely differently. We’ve got to find ways to keep holding the men who do this accountable.
Medical professionals of Reddit, what diagnosis gave you the worst ‘pit-in-your-stomach’ feeling? (r/AskReddit)
- intoxicidal: Obviously very advanced, previously undiagnosed cancer presenting to ED for anything. Feeling multiple golf ball and baseball sized lumps or an abdomen full of tumor is sobering.
- wheelsofstars: My dad is a radiologist. Back when he was doing his residency rotations, he had an elderly woman come in, full of joy, talking about how happy she was that she was officially one year cancer free. He had to tell her that her scans were absolutely riddled with cancer. Everywhere. He cried telling her and she comforted him.
- TheEpicPossum: [In my field (Neuromuscular Medicine) the biggest pit in my stomach comes when I am doing an EMG for something otherwise non-concerning and it starts to look like ALS. I’ll catch myself going from talking and joking with the patient to not talking at all and adding on more body parts to the test, which tends to confuse the patient. For example I’ll be checking the leg for weakness with pulling the toes up and I’ll then have to test the arm, muscles by the spine in the back, and sometimes the tongue.
When the patient asks why I am testing so many body parts, I have to tell them that I’m concerned about a disease that impacts the nerves that move the muscles. I try not to use the word “ALS” at this time because more confirmatory testing needs to take place before confirming a diagnosis that is effectively a death sentence, but 9 times out of 10 that’s what it ends up being.
Telling an obviously very sick patient that they are dying is hard, but telling a patient who came to me for foot or hand weakness that they are dying is heartbreaking. I still think about each one.
It reminds me of a quote that I won’t get exactly right but you’ll get the idea.
“Each physician caries with them a tiny graveyard, where, every now and then, they go to pray.”
For anyone considering becoming a physician, please know that you’ll care so deeply about so many people while being told by the public that you do not. This job was absolutely the right choice for me, but cases like this take a toll that will wash over you in your most private moments.
If my rambling comment resonates with any other healthcare providers, or anyone for that matter, please consider seeing a therapist. Many of us don’t recognize how much we are suppressing until we look inward.
Sorry for the long comment that got off track a bit. Please take care of yourselves.](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/1vnmybj/comment/p3jt3jz/)
What’s the sickest you’ve ever been in your life? (r/AskReddit)
- batmanfanforever15: [Pneumonia. This was about 12 years ago and I was so freaking sick and hurting so bad I thought I was going to die. I was hallucinating from a high fever and coughing my lungs out and it was hurting to breathe. I have never been so damn sick in my life!!
EDIT: All the responses blew me away! I hope everyone got better and is doing better. Pneumonia is no joke and I never took it seriously till I got it.](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/1vnsxj5/comment/p3k4ks9/)
- 5678go: I almost died from Crohn’s Disease. I had my colon removed and now have a permanent ileostomy. Thankfully doing much better now! I would have died without it.
- GoddessHealer: I had a massive saddle pulmonary embolism and was on life support. All of my organs were failing. They called my family in to get permission to withdraw life support. A nurse I knew because I had been her dean came in at change of shift and told the doctors that if they had given up on me that she would like to take over my care and see what she could do. She did what outstanding expert nurses who embody nursing knowledge do: she observed my every moment-to-moment emerging and changing needs. She changed her nursing care accordingly in each moment. She looked for tiny patterns of change, and made adjustments accordingly. She took care of my whole self. I responded, and with each new response, she changed her care of me. I was able to come off life support in a few days. I recovered slowly, over the next months.
